Too Long In Japan?

by Justin Hall

Expats in Japan

A wide range of informed and knee-jerk, provocative and forgettable views on Japan from foreigners appears in this thread on sprawling culture weblog MetaFilter, in response to a long list of You've been in Japan Too Long when... statements. Found on Gen's 'blog.

The original list of "You've been in Japan too long..." ideas contains some poignant gems and some less appealing items. But what's shocking here is the outpouring of feeling on MetaFilter. MetaFilter is a good place to catch flack or collect random comments; this particular topic seems to have awakened the feelings of the audience about Japan as a concept, destination, and place to try to make your life. It's a bit sad to read the accounts of foreigners who have lived in Japan a long time and seem to wish they hadn't, but there's also some nice points on what makes life in Japan fun, beautiful and even sensible at times.
There's some good links included with these posts (slight conflict of interest here - someone plugged my Tokyo tour booklet. Thanks for that!)

MANAV KALYAN SANSTHAN
(HUMAN WELFARE SOCIETY)

Respected Sir/ Madam,

We are from Manav Kalyan Sansthan (Human Welfare Society), .It is a registered non-profit organization working in the northern part of India for the welfare and betterment of street children in Jodhpur district of Rajasthan state. Manav kalyan sansthan came into existence from 1995.

. Due to various social reasons children today leave their homes. Many disable and mentally retarted children also leave their houses .

These children basically find shelter at railway station, bus station etc. where they became soft targets for sexual abuse, brutal violence, human right violation, chemical abuse (drugs) etc. These street children due to financial need either become rag pickers or get involved in small crimes, beggary and gambling. Since these children are either illiterate or have very less education they are kept for work at very less wages at tea stalls, small hotels, inns, and at other small shops. Jodhpur has over 500 such boys and girls which come under the definition of street children.

Since these children have no shelter they live in the railway station were the coolies, sanyasi’s and the army men physically abuse them. The situation of the girl children is more in danger. We are working with these street children from the year 1995, we are providing them with non formal education and are also providing them food and medical aid and are also making them aware of HIV/AIDS. But the major problem of these street children is shelter. We want to build a shelter house so that these street children are saved for abuse and other social evils and we shall also be providing vocational training to them and would work in their rehabilitation, but since our NGO is not that financially capable we want your and your organizations help in building this shelter house. we and our 500 street children living here would be thankful to you.if you can help us. We require 2000000Rs. that is US$10000 for build such a shelter house your any kind of help in building this shelter house would be appreciated.

Thanking You,

Yours Sicerely,

Indu Kumar Avasthi

Secretary
