And this is Self-Defense How?

by Jane Pinckard

Politics

Koizumi and his cronies decided to send troops to Iraq today.

I can't see how this is constitutional. Japanese public opinion is pretty uncomfortable with it too. Maybe this is the sort of volatile issue that will kick-start a new era of political involvement for the citizens.

As my mom used to always say, "If your friends all jumped off a bridge, would you do it too?"

I completely agree with you.

Tragedy of Japan -- 1) Japan ,which has been set free from GHQ since 1951 , has still been politically controlled by U.S.A.
2) Nobody suitable to Prime Minister has appeared.

As I understand it from acquaintances in the State Department, it's Japanese politicians who get panicy when the Americans hint that it might be a good idea to withdraw some troops from Japan. I don't know what their agenda is, but it certainly is not one the general population understands or approves of.

Charlie -- only Chan not Pon

p.s. My wife was a GEBAGAKUSEI in the ANPO JOYAKU year of 1969. We've talked about why Japanese political activity seemed to die when the student movement died. We kind of came to the conclusion that the indicident at Asamaso was the death knell -- not really the incident itself, but the fact that the Japanese Red Army had actually killed members of its own organization. I guess the masses figured if that's what political action was all about, then it wasn't worth it.

Can't you ? To send troops for Iraq, there is not necessary to comment if sending troops is constitutional or not. This time we need to appeal it directly to the world that we take responsibility to establish new peaceful society . Additionally the government would like to get benefits arouse in Iraq as the U.S. and other countries' government do.
Remember Gulf war in 1990. Japan had numerous amount of finacial support toward U.S.A. and Kuwait , because the constitution in Japan is prohibited to have military troops. Then we thought financial support the best way instead of it.
When all was over , do you think what Japan was claimed from the world ?
JAPAN IS CHICKEN. JAPAN KEPT AWAY THE DUTY TO OWE. BECAUSE JAPAN DID NOT SEND TROOPS.

You might not satisfy the above situtaion. But it shows one part of real diplomatic strategy.

Self defense not in the literal term.
