Rikai.com - Magic Translation
by Justin Hall
Language, Technology
Rikai.com provides an absolutely amazing, essential service - character by character, word by word translation between Japanese and English on web pages. It works like near-magic; as you hold your mouse cursor over a particular Kanji character, and a floating window provides the pronunciation, meaning, and possible compounds. It reads all sorts of Japanese, 理解が英語のペジも読むことできます。 ほんとうまほうです。
理解が大好き - とてもべんりです。
Rikai was developed by Todd David Rudick, a software engineer in Tokyo. He keeps the site up to date with a sidebar of his baby pictures, as well as the capacity for you to maintain your own list of discovered words.

This is amazing! What a great use of technology.... This is the kind of thing that makes me really thankful for computers even after a week or trying to stabilize my operating system.
It's really miraculous to see this in action. After using it for a while, and then leaving my computer to walk around Tokyo, I start wishing that I had Rikai implanted in my glasses or something - so I could have explanations floating over all the text around me. Or at least Rikai in my Game Boy Advance or PlayStation 2 when I'm trying to play all those long role-playing or strategy type games with lots of text!
Hi All,
Please try my site <a href="http://www.jisyo.org/">Jisyo.org</a> too if you get a chance. For Windows dictionary software supporting Jim Breen's excellent <a href="http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/japanese.html">Edict Project</a> there is <a href="http://www.coolest.com/jquicktrans/">JquickTrans</a> And the ever exciting <a href="http://www.coolest.com/penpen/">Kanji Trainer Penpen</a>.

I just started using Rikai recently as well. It is truely amazing and has made me almost literate. My quality of life has dramatically increased.
What happened to rikai.com? The page is gone.
hello Kevin, I just noticed your comment so I tried it out, and was able to access rikai.com. Is it working for you now?
Dear Junko,
I have been used rikai for about a year and it is fantastic. Unfortunately lastely I could not access anymore to the site!!
I tried to open the main page Japanese english translation but just "mojibake", the same for English-Japanese page.
Is it a problem of the server, or the site just does not exist anymore?
Please let me know
Thanx
Mike.
P.s. anybody around here knows if there is any site like rikai into the net?. I used RJ (Read Japanese SW) last year (a friend of mine had free full version of it, don't ask me how he can have it!!). It is not bad, very similar to rikai, but it costs 150 bucks!! (full version!!) Trial free version does not do anything (just dictionary).
Thanx for your help
Bye
Mike
