Books
The story of one of the first gaijin entrepreneurs in Japan and also at the heart of strange connections between the Japanese gangsters, the LDP and the US government.
Tokyo Underworld revolves around the life of Nick Zapetti, Mafia Boss of Tokyo and the founder of Nicola Pizza. He is at the same time one of the first gaijin entrepreneurs in Japan and also at the heart of strange connections between the Japanese gangsters, the LDP and the US government.
The book was originally written in English by Robert Whiting, but has been translated into Japanese and is available on amazon.co.jp as well. There is a photo of the old Cabaret Mikado before it was torn down and changed into Plaza Mikado by Konami-san.

Very subjectively, very recommended.
Forget the tourist books,
this is the best read about Japan.
The real Tokyo.
For those who really want to understand the post-war foundation of this eccentric society.
Time for some Pizza. ^_^
One of the all too few books that attempts to tell the honne (truth) of Japan to the world by a foreigner who is fluent in Japanese and with plenty of experience in Japan. Unfortunately, most non-Japanese cannot see beyond the tatemae (surface facade) of the "nice, polite, clean, honest" Japanese.
I lived in Japan over ten years and had a lot of experience with the legal system both as a plaintiff and defendant. I know of the frustration Whiting writes about. I am working on my own book about what I experienced in Japan. I hope to do as good a job as Whiting did when writing his.
